Profile Image

I am inspired by music technology both from engineering and artistic points of view. In particular, I am interested in how it can help us develop novel ways of interacting with music, providing tools, contexts, and insights that enrich music appreciation and music creation.

I am a senior researcher and software developer at the Music Technology Group of Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. I work on audio analysis and semantic annotation of large-scale music collections using signal processing and machine learning techniques.

I am the lead developer of Essentia, an open-source C++/Python library for audio analysis and audio-based music information retrieval. My work includes the design and implementation of new audio analysis algorithms, project documentation, and supervision of related research.

I am also one of the coordinators of AcousticBrainz, an open database of music features extracted from audio with over 29 million submissions, bridging the gap between audio analysis technology and the broader open music metadata community.

I serve as a supervisor in various industrial R&D projects held by Music Technology Group in collaboration with industrial partners (such as LaCúpula Music / SonoSuite, Kakao, Flits, HearDis!, BMAT, and others). In addition, at the university, I take part in teaching activities for the Master in Sound and Music Computing program.

I graduated from Moscow State University with a Diploma in Applied Math and Informatics in 2006 and received my Ph.D. in Information, Communication, and Audiovisual Technologies at the Music Technology Group of Pompeu Fabra University in 2013. My PhD thesis was focused on music recommendation systems using audio analysis and metadata.

Music Bio

Over the past 15 years, I took part in various music projects, live performances, and events. Starting in 2005 as a co-founder, DJ, and promoter for an 8-bit music art community Chipcult in Russia, I have installed in Barcelona since 2007 and moved on exploring different music collaborations across styles, from hardware jams, sound art performances and freeform radio programs to club music and DJ sessions. I’ve participated in various local music festivals such as No-No-Logic 2009, Mostra Sonora 2010, Cau D'Orella 2011 & 2012, Curt Circuit Fest 2012, KonventPARAULA 2015, and VisualBrazil 2015.
