Abstract This project aims to explore the possibilities offered by current audio separation techniques to process auditory streams in popular music studio productions. First an overview of the techniques is presented within a new taxonomy proposal, and secondly the implementation of a real-time audio separation VST (Virtual Studio Technologies) plug-in is described. The VST plug-in uses some of the overviewed techniques to cluster the frequency bins of the input signal by means of panning discrimination. A set of tests conclude that the implemented plug-in can turn into a useful music studio post-production tool.
